I’m celebrating Toyin Sokefun Bello, popularly known as TY Bello. An exceptional woman who is a huge inspiration to me. A singer, songwriter, photographer and philanthropist.
TY Bello was born on 14 January, 1978 in Ogun State, Nigeria. She attained a degree in economics from the University of Lagos. She briefly practiced journalism and eventually ventured in to photography. TY Bello emerged on to Nigeria’s musical landscape as a member of the defunct group Kush.
TY Bello is an award-winning singer and photographer whose work is internationally recognised and holds a reputation as one of Nigeria’s foremost photographers. Her evocative portraits never fail to rouse strong emotions and have made her one of the most applauded and keenly sought after portrait photographers in the country. Indeed she has the unique distinction of having photographed three sitting Nigerian Presidents. As one of Nigeria’s most recognized artists; TY Bello produces engaging yet timeless music. She launched her successful debut solo album Greenland in 2008.
TY Bello was working in Lagos where she was creating a photo shoot for the British rapper Tinie Tempah, She later discovered that there was a remarkable looking woman in the background. In an attempt to find Olajumoke Orisaguna she arranged for Olajumoke’s picture to appear on the cover of Style magazine.
TY Bello organizes an annual photography exhibition to raise funds for orphans in Nigeria. She is also the director of Link-a-child, an NGO dedicated to proliferating information on orphanages in Nigeria and seeking sponsorship on their behalf. In July 2011, TY Bello was honoured by the non-profit Communication for Change organisation in a five-part documentary film series titled RedHot.
She is truly a source of inspiration and a phenomenal woman!
