Salawa Abeni was born on May 5, 1961 in Nigeria. She began her professional career in waka music when she released her debut album titled, Late General Murtala Ramat Mohammed, in 1976 on Leader Records. It became the first recording by a female artist in Yoruba songs to sell over a million copies in Nigeria. Queen Salawa has won numerous awards. Queen Salawa was crowned “Queen of Waka Music” by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi in 1992.

My main love for Queen Salawa Abeni is in the fact that she came into singing at the time that “waka” type of music was dying. She took hold of it and made it hers.
She introduced more musical instruments and equipment and dancers, she took “waka” music nation wide and international and introduced more female youths into waka and singing of traditional music. Salawa Abeni is a big hero of Nigeria music and an icon

Queen Abeni, happen to be a friend to my cousin in London, First met her in London and she came to our house then in Elephant & Castle, she was very descent and a jovial person and we ask her to sing for us, which she did and everyone enjoyed her song and in side the house we are all spraying her with dollars, love her.

My personal person, a woman like no other. A woman of substance and integrity. A woman who is worth associating with. A pillar of support and a woman with tremendously wisdom. She’s a pioneer, a path – finder and a leader whom like Madam Onyeka mingled and stood their grounds in the Nigerian musical field at times music was consisting of male dominance. A friend, a sister, a wife and a mother. I personally luv her so much… by the way… she forever calls me “boyfriend mii” hehehehe. All hail the Queen… Her royal songstress Queen Salawa Abeni (the waka maestro). Thank you for celebrating such a fantastic woman… so shall u also be celebrated at the right time. IJMN ..Amen.
