Black History Month!

“True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice”- Martin Luther King Jr.

The celebration of Black History Month began as “Negro History Week,” which was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator and publisher. It became a month-long celebration in 1976.

I am black
It’s not just the pigmentation of my skin
I am beauty
I am age long resilience carried in a black bag of hope

I have been shaken, tossed, and marginalized
Still, I rise
I have been deprived of most of my fundamental human rights, even while in the loins of my father
Yet I am unwearying

I have been judged by the colour of my skin
Yet I pay no attention
I know my worth lies in my personality, not in my pigmentation
I have been made to believe my history encompasses only defeat
I have stood and still stand in the midst of merciless intimidation

Still, I rise

From, the lying tongues of those who claim
They have a richer culture than mine
I might be suited five days a week
Wearing a million dollar human hair
But my African corn rose is forever my true dentity

I am black

I am richness
I am class
I am African
