So today I’m celebrating the great American soul singer Aretha Franklin. A phenomenal woman who was a huge inspiration. Aretha Louis Franklin was born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee. She began her career as a child singing gospel at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan.
At the age of 18, she embarked on her career, recording for Columbia Records. In 1966, Aretha Franklin signed to Atlantic Records. Aretha achieved commercial acclaim and success with songs such as “Respect”, “Think”, “Chain of Fools”, “You Make Me Feel like a Natural Woman” etc. Known as “the queen of soul”, Aretha sold more than 75m records in her lifetime and won 18 Grammy awards. Her last album was a Brand New Me, released in November 2017.
Aretha Franklin received numerous honors throughout her career, including a 1987 induction in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, becoming the first female performer to be inducted. Aretha is listed on at least two all-time lists by Rolling Stone magazine, including the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. Aretha Franklin died on the 16th of August 2018 at the age of 76.
